Blame it on England and Kobe

The other day a friend of mine, while congratulating me for finally getting into the world’s favorite substitute for war, wondered why the hell North America calls it “soccer” as opposed to football, which is what everyone else calls it. “What is a soccer anyway?” Well, friend, I have looked into this one. Apart from … Continue reading

It's Football Time Already?

September 9th. It’s more than just the anniversary of California being admitted into the Union or the date Washington D.C. was formally named that, after our first president George. It’s also the day the fantasy football season begins. Drew Brees and his high powered New Orleans Saints offense will take the field against Adrian Peterson, … Continue reading

Game 2: The NBA Finals vs. Adam Sandler’s Nips

BOSTON — The NBA Finals began right under my nose. I completely missed Game 1, which probably worked out for the best. I would have been riding a high of excessive hometown pride and may have made a few stupid bets. Owing more money to unsavory con-men isn’t something I need—I already owe Verizon a … Continue reading

Let's Have a Quickie: The Weekend Call-Ups

Earlier today I got my left knee meniscus removed. While this all but ends my dreams of starting next to Lebron next season in the World’s Most Famous Arena, I did have a pain killer aided epiphany. Rookies are starting to get called up, way more than I expected and a few different ones than … Continue reading

Favre Watch 2010: Longwell Speculation

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has called in a favor from his long time friend, kicker Ryan Longwell, to heighten the drama of his imminent decision. Longwell has stated that he believes there is a fair chance Favre could actually retire, and puts the chances of him returning to him retiring squarely at 50-50. This is … Continue reading

The Devil's Advocate: Jim Joyce

Umpiring is a thankless job. You always hear about how the strike zone was off, or how that fair ball was really a foul, or how that runner actually avoided the tag. Rarely do you hear about “great calls” or a well officiated game. Perhaps players and managers acknowledge umpires after games — I wouldn’t … Continue reading

Memorial Day Weekend Hangover: Effect on Fantasy Baseball

What a Memorial Day weekend. You can tell it was a helluva Memorial Day, because I’m writing my Memorial Day themed column on Wednesday night. In between supporting our troops by drinking copious amounts and gorging ourselves on giant meals, there were some pretty significant fantasy happenings. Every one of them has a serious impact … Continue reading

The Boston Celtics v. Mole-People Referee Masseuses

Bah. This laziness must be overcome. It’s not like there isn’t anything to write about. For one thing, the Celtics pulled off a 4-2 series win over the Magic. The win is impressive if you were actually nervous the Magic stood a chance to catch up. All the same, Boston did have reason to be anxious. While difficult to pull off, these against the wall rallies have happened, once by Boston (the Sox-Yanks 2004 playoffs, which led to the biggest choke in baseball history) and another to Boston (the Bruins being the Bruins).
