Saturday/Saturday: Another Season Gone
So yet another Premiership season is over; Chelsea emphatically crowned themselves Premiership Champions last Sunday by thumping Wigan 8-0. Man U tried in vain at home with a 4-0 win over Stoke, but the Blues results left no doubt about who is cream of the crop this year. They notably collected the Golden Boot (Drogba 31 goals), the Golden Glove (Cech) and set a Premiership record of number of goals scored in a season (103) in the process. They also take on the ruined Portsmouth on Saturday in the culminating event to the seasons calendar, the FA Cup Final. Wengers north London boys were content, or rather had to settle for third; whilst Spurs galvanized a stellar season by securing the last automatic Champions League spot by beating Man City in a tense affair at Eastlands in the penultimate game. Now we can just observe as the off season transfers begin to unfold: Torres to City, Fabregas to Barca??? We shall see……
Leeds secured automatic promotion to the Championship on the final day of the season, although true to form they made it hard for themselves; getting a man sent of in the first half and going a goal down early in the second, my nerves were in tatters, thanks gents! And this weekend sees the Blue Square Premiership Playoff Final take place a Wembley! The what you say? That’s right, Blue Square Premiership; nestled somewhere on the sporting radar between the likes of international blind archery and welly throwing. But this years final has a personal side; my “Minstermen”, York City FC are taking Oxford United. Before what looks like a record crowd (over 40, 000), York fans will be out numbered three to one, but the underdog role is something we relish. The spoils are huge: a return to the football League (League Two), after languishing in non-league football for far too long (six years), financially the gains would be significant, but its also just the kudos of returning to the dignified ranks. The possibility is there, and I think we will take it – trying to find an Inn or drinking establishment in the fair city of New York that is showing such an immense event will no doubt be difficult.
So what to do now the season is over?!? Rest on out laurels, sip Pimms and watch cricket? No, no and thrice, NO!!! There is a small gathering, some would say event, taking place in South Africa this summer that will keep us out of mischief until Premiership insanity resumes. Its called the World Cup and here at Venuing we will be dissecting, discussing, arguing, ridiculing and commenting on it over the next few months; spouting decisive vernacular along with absolute bollocks about the competition, beginning with, over the next few weeks, a look at the dark horses, the outsiders, the ones to watch, so that you are armed and primed come June 11th.
